I was once a part of this online RPG story called "Solar Soaring" where I played a character named Vivian Chauviteau. She had a little robot pet called "SIMI" which was actually an acronym (which I've forgotten.) It does a whole range of things like record footage, audio, communicate, create force fields, measure, scan... most of the things an iphone can do. Except the awesome thing about this robot is that it can also transform into a turtle and lizard. Hummingbird is it's first form.
This was done in photoshop... The original sketch was a concept for my friend's short film - but he didn't end up using the design because he wanted an owl character.. so I've stolen it back and painted it. =3
It was done all in photoshop, alternating between painting shadows and light. And using the hue/saturation adjustments a lot to get the right colour. Texture applied to the background.
Thank you! Hmm.. I always have trouble explaining how I paint! (I should video it some day)... It's a combination of techniques pulled from random youtube videos, taking "digital painting with Bobby Chiu" at schoolism.com and just some improvised I've learned intuitively from painting on my own and for some of my jobs. I'm impatient... so I usually just approach a painting like a puzzle I have to solve as quick as possible.
I think I mentioned it started with a sketch ... but it actually looks nothing like the final painting (it's just a humming bird). Then I decided to turn it into a robot (admittedly some of the design sensibilities were inspired from Clamp's CLOVER).
I used photoshop - just playing around with brush settings. Also most likely would have used dodge and burn. And definitely would have played around with hue/saturation. Oh and I also applied a texture to the painting.
